Village school pupil names new facilities at £1.2m Denbighshire education centre

THE stunning Vale of Clwyd landscape inspired a school pupil to victory in a college competition.

Catrin Wynne was among local children to come up with names for rooms at the £1.2m Hwb Cymunedol (Community Hub) rural education centre at Coleg Cambria Llysfasi.

Catrin, from Ysgol Pentrecelyn, looked to the fields and farms around Llysfasi and decided upon these four titles – Cricor, Y Gelli, Y Waun and Y Accre.

The talented nine year-old said: “I am really happy my names were chosen and honoured that our village and school will always be represented in the new building.

“I looked at a map and chose the places around the school as they are such a big part of our village and community.”

Headteacher Andrew Evans added: “We are very proud of Catrin, and all of the pupils who came up with some fantastic ideas.

“This is a great legacy for her and for the school as it further strengthens our links with the college and the hub in particular is a great asset to the Vale.”

The competition was open to Ysgol Pentrecelyn and Ysgol Llanfair and judged by Llinos Roberts, Cambria’s Head of Corporate Communications and Welsh Language – who hails from the area – and Head of Llysfasi Elin Roberts. Both joined the children for a prizegiving ceremony.

“We had many brilliant submissions, but Catrin’s really captured the spirit and warmth of this part of Denbighshire, the families, farms and history that are so important to Coleg Cambria Llysfasi and our community,” said Elin.

“We have just celebrated our centenary year, so bringing tradition and the contemporary together seems quite apt.

“And naming these rooms was the final task before it opens to the public, which we look forward to doing as soon as restrictions ease and it is safe to do so.

“Well done and thank you again to the schools and their wonderful pupils.”

The two-storey education centre includes IT and multimedia suites, space for workshops, classrooms, breakout spaces, a kitchen area, offices, and meeting rooms which will deliver bilingual and family and community-focused services.
